Obsidian is one of the toughest blocks that players can mine in Minecraft Survival. It can also be created when lava comes into contact with water. Players need the best tool (diamond/netherite) to mine this block and it also has the highest breaking time.
In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase the top 6 best uses for Obsidian in Minecraft.
1. Building explosion resistance structures
With a blast resistance of 1200, Obsidian is pretty much immune to normal explosions. Even the Ender Dragon cannot destroy it. Therefore, making structures with this block would prevent your base from getting destroyed by randomly spawned mobs such as the creeper.
It takes 8.35 seconds to mine one block of Obsidian, and because of that, most players don't do it manually. This makes it an extremely effective defensive block, and because of that, Obsidian is commonly used in many bases in multiplayer servers as protection from griefers.
2. Create an Enchanting table
An enchanting table is a block that allows players to spend their experience point levels to enchant tools, weapons, books, armor, and certain other items. This is the main method players can use to improve their characters. 4 blocks of obsidian are needed to craft an enchanting table.
To enchant using the table, players will need enchanting levels, meet the level requirement and lapis lazuli. When the table is opened, a small menu will come up with a spot for players to place the item. On the right is a list of 3 enchantments for players to choose from. They can enchant items as long as they have enough resources (levels and lapis lazuli).
Enchantment levels can be increased by placing bookshelves next to the enchanting table while separating them with one block of air. This results in a 5x5 square, with an opening for the player to get out.
3. Create a beacon
A beacon is a block that projects a light beam skyward and can provide status effects such as Speed, Jump Boost, Haste, Regeneration, Resistance, or Strength to nearby players. To create a beacon, players need 3 blocks of obsidian, a nether star, and 5 blocks of glass.
To activate a beacon, players need to place the beacon on top of a pyramid made from gold, iron, netherite, emerald, or diamond.
In total, a beacon pyramid needs four layers: 3x3, 5x5, 7x7, and 9x9. Put each layer on top of each other then place the beacon on top in the center of the 3x3 blocks.
4. Create an Ender Chest
Ender chests are a type of chest whose contents are exclusive to each player and can be accessed from anywhere in the world. By bringing this chest, players can farm whatever they want in the end and store them for later usage. It is fairly expensive to create an ender chest - players need one eye of ender and 8 obsidian blocks.
Furthermore, it is possible to greatly increase the space of an ender chest by pairing it with shulker boxes, which can be farmed easily in the End. Just fill the boxes with the desired items, then place them inside the ender chest.
5. Nether Portal
To create a nether portal in Minecraft, players need 10 obsidian blocks to build a 5 by 4 portal frame. The corners of the frame can be other materials. To ignite the Portal, you need Flint and Steel or a Fire Charge to light up one of the bottom pieces of obsidian. The inside of the portal frame should light up with a purple glow - this means the portal is now active.
If you find a ruined portal while exploring, it is possible to just fix it up instead of building a brand new one. While ruined portal can spawn with crying obsidian, you need to replace those blocks with normal obsidian for the whole thing to work.
6. Create a Respawn Anchor
One of the reasons that the Nether is amongst the hardest zones in Minecraft is that players cannot sleep in a bed while inside it. To respawn inside the Nether, they would need to craft a Respawn Anchor instead.
To create a respawn anchor, players need to gather three glowstone blocks and six obsidian blocks. Players need to charge the respawn anchor to set it as the revive point in the Nether. When crafted, a Respawn Anchor has no (zero) charge and can't yet be used until charged. Players can use up to 4 glowstone blocks with it to charge.
