3D Realms is the developer that has a deep love with the retro-style 90s-inspired shooter, as we've recently seen Ion Fury (originally Ion Maiden) - a great game but mainly famous for its scandal regarding its similar name to a rock band.
Has not satisfied with that launch, 3D Realms is now introducing WRATH: Aeon of Ruin - an effort to revive the experience of the classic Quake. It still follows the bloody body-dismemberment of the retro shooters, but add some small fantasy elements into its good.
The game is now available on Steam Early Access and here's the trailer from 3D Realms for this announcement:
The story of WRATH: Aeon of Ruin
WRAITH: Aeon of Ruin takes the settings of the boundary between the World of the Death and the Mundane. You'll step into the shoes of an Outlander, who got here after passing the Ageless Sea. And suddenly, amidst the darkness swallowing everything, a spooky being with a white cloak appeared.
It's the Shepherd of Wayward Souls, and it tells you to work for him or disappear in the sea of darkness. Don't have any other choices, you'll have to follow its order to trace and eliminate the last Guardians of the Old World. Now, you have to make an adventure deep into the dark world to search for ancient ruins, unveil secrets and shoot your way through the fantasy horrors lurking.
Gameplay features
The story of WRATH: Aeon of Ruin is already very dark and haunting, but when it comes to gameplay, the horror is even scarier. Basically, it's a first-person shooting game that will remind you of the 90s retro-style shooter such as Quake and Doom.
To be more specific, you'll equip yourself with a wide range of weapons and test your reflexion in the dark world of the Death. It consists of a lot of level with a variety of landscapes, including crypts, temples, ruins and forests, and all of them has a deep secret down its soil. Apart from that, you can also find Lying down there is a lot of sinister monsters that fear nothing while approaching you and tear you apart.
Hence, you'll have to search for the mighty Artifacts in the darkest area to stand a chance against them. There are also a lot of powerful weapons there as well, including both melee ones and the guns. The guns are also the special parts of WRATH: Aeon of Ruin, where each of them has a certain power and is handy in certain situations.
For example, the pistols fire very fast and often goes with plenty of bullets, which is useful when you have enough time and space kiting a small number of monsters. On the other hand, the shotgun is the loudest, strongest and messiest weapon in the game, which has high damage that can blow up the enemies' limb out with a close-range shot. In exchange, it's very slow, and you will not find its bullets easily.
And in the situations where you've run out of bullets, the melee weapons will be your last savior. To make up for its short-range, they are very powerful, that will help you chop the monsters into pieces with only some strikes. All of those weapons will be updated in the future, bringing more to your arsenals. 3D Realms also announced that new levels, enemies and artifacts will also come with later updates.
Release date
3D Realms has announced that they'll release the full version of WRATH: Aeon of Ruin at some times in Summer 2020. But if you can't wait for it, feel free to get the Early Access version of the game on Steam now.
Be mindful that the price for the game will increase at its official launch, so now is a great time to buy it. Enjoy!
