Genshin Impact hinted at Khaenri'ah's existence way back in the 2020 Teyvat Chapter Preview: Travail video. As the game unfolded, it showcased this nation as incredibly advanced, blending technology and alchemy, renowned for its downfall during the Cataclysm. The preview suggested that eventually, Travelers would explore Khaenri'ah, promising a trove of discoveries about its history.

It might take some time for players to venture into this nation, whether it’s revived by the Abyss sibling, as suggested in the Traveler quest "Requiem of the Echoing Depths" (which is their aspiration), or if players get to explore the remnants of its ancient civilization. References to this old world have been sprinkled throughout crucial moments in the story, like the Interlude chapters, adding depth and intrigue for players to uncover.

Even within the ruins of Khaenri'ah, individuals maintain ties or direct connections to the nation. Prominent figures among them in Genshin Impact include Albedo, Kaeya, and Dainsleif, each with distinct affiliations:

  • Albedo, a synthetic human crafted by Rhinedottir, likely instigated the Cataclysm, the pivotal event behind the nation's downfall.
  • Kaeya's lineage, the Alberichs, held significant authority in Khaenri'ah's government.
  • Dainsleif served as the Twilight Sword, leading the Black Serpent Knights.
  • Rhinedottir, often known as Gold in Genshin Impact lore, practiced Khemia—a form of alchemy enabling the creation of artificial lifeforms. She's notorious for crafting
  • Rifthounds, Albedo, false Albedos, and the deceased Dragon Durin in Dragonspine. This practice is largely blamed for the nation's collapse.

Khaenri'ahn Achievements

Khaenri'ah, an underground realm, gained renown for its alchemical breakthroughs attributed to Rhinedottir's experiments. Apart from these advancements, the inhabitants of Khaenri'ah devised the Ruin Guard adversaries encountered throughout the Genshin Impact world, initially termed "Field Tillers." Following the nation's collapse, these war machines dispersed across Teyvat. Yet, there's a likelihood that the Fatui faction is independently producing these robots, as hinted in Childe's Story Quest, wherein players explored one of the Doctor's deserted laboratories.

Important Khaenri'ahn History

The ancient realm stood distinct among nations as the sole one without a ruling Genshin Impact Archon or deity. While other lands worshipped divine figures, this nation governed itself, led by a royal family helmed by King Irmin. Irmin was known for introducing forbidden knowledge to drive the nation's progress, influencing various aspects such as the creation of Ruin Guards and Rhinedottir's Khemia endeavors.

When Rhinedottir's creations broke free, spreading terror not just in Khaenri'ah but across Teyvat, Celestia and most Archons intervened, excluding Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, tasked with safeguarding Irminsul. The divine beings fractured the land and cursed Khaenri'ah's inhabitants: the "pure-blooded" were cursed with immortality, while others transformed into creatures like Genshin Impact's Hilichurls. The Cataclysm not only obliterated the nation but claimed the lives of two of the six involved Archons: Raiden Makoto and Egeria.

Other Extinct Civilizations of Genshin Impact

Genshin Impact consistently astonishes with its intricate lore spanning the world of Teyvat. Stories of ancient civilizations lie entombed in texts, mysterious pages, and scattered diaries, offering rich insights. Delving into these realms not only enriches the world-building but also sheds light on the past and current events. As the saying goes, failing to learn from history leads to its repetition.

The famed ancient civilization of Khaenri'ah is a well-known example, yet it's not the sole relic of the past. Every nation accessible to players holds a history that predates its modern era—wherever people settle, a legacy from bygone eras exists. Even Mondstadt, a familiar location, carries tales of predecessors waiting to be explored.

Below are some of the other extinct civilizations in Genshin.

Sal Vindagnyr

Interestingly, there's a scarcity of information concerning the era when Sal Vindagynr thrived, instead, hidden lore within ancient texts recounts the downfall of this civilization. This location, now Genshin Impact's Dragonspine, was a different landscape—lush and green, not the snowy expanse it is today. Notably, it housed a princess gifted with foresight. She prophesied the arrival of a malevolent dragon—Durin, whose remains now rest in Dragonspine.

Around the time of the princess's vision—though details remain vague—the Skyfrost Nail plummeted from Celestia, the celestial realm above. Curiously, it fractured into three pieces, further breaking apart. The reason for the Celestial Nail's descent remains a mystery. Within the kingdom stood a significant white tree, shattered by one fragment of the nail, though little else is documented about it. Attempting to salvage the tree, the princess grafted it onto another but met her demise in the process. Ultimately, the lone survivor was an outlander, feeling betrayed by Celestia for these tragic events.

Guili Assembly

More than 3000 years ago, the Guili Assembly thrived under the joint rule of Geo Archon Morax and the God of Dust Guizhong, supported by adepti and gods like Marchosius (now known as Xiangling's companion, Guoba). This expansive territory was renowned for its engineering prowess. Even the adepti and gods engaged in amicable competitions to showcase their inventions. Cloud Retainer and Guizhong often vied in these contests, seeking Morax's judgment on their creations, with Guizhong typically emerging victorious.

However, with the onset of the Archon War and Guizhong's downfall, the Guili Assembly crumbled. In the aftermath, Liyue Harbor emerged, and the populace mourned the loss of Guizhong. Before the war, she had initiated the construction of the Guizhong Ballista, left incomplete upon her demise. Cloud Retainer took it upon herself to finalize the defensive weapon, designed to automatically target perceived threats, even as small as Genshin Impact's Treasure Hoarders.

Enkanomiya

Beneath the waters of Watatsumi Island lay one of Teyvat's ancient civilizations. Following the Primordial One's triumph over the Seven Sovereigns, humans began their existence on the planet's surface. Enkanomiya, it's hinted, used to exist above ground until The Second Who Came engaged in a duel with the Primordial One, causing the nation to sink amid their conflict. Remarkably, the people adapted and thrived underwater, though true prosperity took three years to achieve.

At that point, Istaroth bestowed them with knowledge to craft the Dainichi Mikoshi, providing light to ward off Genshin Impact's Vishaps, creatures averse to light. The lanterns they initially used were insufficient. However, corrupt nobles governed the land, shifting blame onto someone known as the Sunchild, who, being a child, couldn't truly govern and was manipulated into dark deeds by these nobles. When Orobashi descended into Enkanomiya and was accepted as their deity, the people rebelled against the corrupt rulers and relocated some individuals to the surface, to Watatsumi.
