Trading is a very useful mechanic in Minecraft. It allows players to acquire a number of rare items at later levels, such as enchanted diamond gear and the like. However, in order to enjoy that, players need to level their villagers up to Master.

Therefore, in this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase how to level up villagers to master level faster in Minecraft.

1. How much villager exp do you need?

Each villager has 5 career levels that can be increased through trading. Both the villager and player gain experience upon trading. They start at Novice and when the experience bar of a villager is full, they level up and the next set of trades will be unlocked. Villagers need 10/70/150/250 exp to level up to Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, Master, respectively.

The profession of a villager dictates its trading pool. Different professions are assigned to each villager based on their job-site block. Upon receiving a new profession, the appearance and trading interface of a villager changed.

The bar under the villager's name show how much exp you need to level up.

Novice villagers who have not traded yet can lose their profession and gain a new one if you remove their job site block and place a new one. Be careful, as once you trade with a villager, the villager keeps their profession forever and subsequently locks in the offered trades. Villagers disable an offer after a number of trades, however, they reactivate it up to 2 times per day.

2. How to level villagers to master fast?

The best way to do this is to keep trading with them. They get XP for every successful trade performed. Not all trades are equal, however - the general rule is that buying items from them with Emerald yields more EXP than selling items to them.

Therefore, mining a lot of emeralds and then buying items from villagers is the quickest.

How to get emerald?

Before the 1.18 update, the extreme hills biome is the only biome where you can find Emeralds. But now, the update added 3 new mountainous biomes to the game, Stony Peaks, Jagged Peaks, Frozen Peaks. Players can find Emeralds in all these new biomes and they are not that hard to find. Just pick up your axe and start digging.

You find Emeralds in mountainous biomes in Minecraft.

These ores are also available in structures that are rich in emeralds such as Desert Temple, Jungle Temple, and in loot chest, treasures in Villages. There are a lot of loot pools that include Emeralds, but it is rare to find one in these loot pools.

Which trade to pick?

Resource-wise, the easiest villagers to acquire the master level are stonemason, librarian, armorer, weaponsmith, and toolsmith. Take note that the item the villager actually wants would give more exp than other items. For example, giving coal to a novice armorer yield 2 XP instead of the usual 1.

Not all trades give the same amount of XP - buying tends to give more.
