Minecraft is a fairly realistic game, with day and night cycles. Since the game’s inception, light has helped Minecraft players traverse through underground tunnels and brighten up home turfs.

As hostile mobs only spawn in darkness, placing light sources around your base is very important. In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase the top 10 most useful light sources in Minecraft 1.19.

1. Torches

The torch is the most common lighting source in the entire history of Minecraft, ever. All it takes to create torches are a furnace and a number of wood blocks for both charcoal and sticks.

Players can mass-produce and place torches whenever they want. These burning sticks have a surprisingly high light level of 14, just a bit lower than the highest light level in Minecraft. There are plenty of uses for torches, from spawn-proofing to marking your routes to avoid getting lost.

2. Jack o' Lantern

A Jack o'lantern emits more light than the torch used to craft it. They emit the maximum possible luminance of 15. They also provide light while submerged underwater.

Players can use these lanterns to create Iron golems and Snow golems.

3. Glowstone

Glowstone is a light-emitting block that occurs in branching structures, found hanging from ceilings and overhangs in the Nether. Similar to Shroomlights, Glowstone blocks emit a light level of 15, the brightest possible light level in the game.

They can be used to craft respawn anchors and redstone lamps. Although glowstone can only be found in block form in the Nether, all renewable ways of obtaining glowstone are accessed through the Overworld.

4. Shroomlights

Shroomlights are light-emitting blocks that generate in huge fungi. Both crimson and warped huge fungi can generate shroomlights near the top.

They provide a light level of 15, the highest level in the game. Overall, players can use this block for base decoration.

5. Candle

Candle is a new light source added in the Caves and Cliffs Part 1 update. It is an expensive decorative item that could give the room in your base a completely new and sophisticated look. Players need strings and honeycombs to create candles.

You can stack them together and the more candles are stacked together, the more light they emit. The maximum is 12, with 4 candles on a single block. A single candle only has a light level of 3, which does not prevent mobs from spawning.

6. Sea Lantern

A sea lantern is an underwater light source that appears in ocean monuments and underwater ruins. It is pretty much the ocean floor’s Glowstone. The Sea lantern is one of the brightest Minecraft light sources in the game, with a luminance of 15.

Players need 4 Prismarine Shard and 5 Prismarine Crystals to create a Sea Lantern block. Aside from being a Minecraft light source, Sea Lanterns can also be used to activate a Conduit.

7. End Rod

An end rod is a decorative light source that emits white particles. To craft it, you’ll need to add one Blaze Rod at the bottom and one Popped Chorus Fruit on top. With one ingredient of each, you’ll produce four End Rods.

The best part about End Rods is that they don’t break when their supporting block gets destroyed. This makes it a versatile tool for decoration - players can stick it normally on a wall block or the ground or destroy the tethered blocks so that they float in the air.

8. Glow Berries

Players can place Glow berries under blocks to create cave vines for decoration. It also prevents hostile mobs from spawning, as when bearing glow berries, cave vines give off a light level of 14.

Glow berries can be fed to foxes to breed them. Foxes are similar to cats when being fed as a wild animal; a sudden movement by the player may cause the fox to flee even if the player holds glow berries. The resulting baby fox trusts the player and does not flee.

9. Campfire

A campfire is a special multi-purpose block that can be used to cook food, pacify bees, and more. Unlike fire, campfires do not spread under any circumstances.

Campfires produce smoke particles that float up around 10 blocks before disappearing. If a hay bale is placed below, the campfire becomes a signal fire and the smoke floats up 24 blocks instead. Players can use this function to explore the camp's location without getting lost.

Aside from being craftable and extremely bright (Level 15), the campfire block also naturally spawns in taiga or snowy taiga villages.

10. Redstone Lamp

These blocks function similar to the Glowstones — the only difference is you need a Redstone mechanism to activate it, like a lever, a button, or a Redstone Torch.

They generate naturally in ancient cities. An active redstone lamp produces block light 15. An inactive redstone lamp produces no light.
