Borderland has been a pretty decent shooter franchise over the year, with great single-player/coop content. Borderland 3 is not an exception… the system requirement is low enough that with a semi-modern rig, you would probably still be able to enjoy everything the game has to offer.

1 – Borderland 3 System Requirements For PC

  • CPU: AMD FX-8350/Intel Core i5-3570
  • GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7970/NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 2GB
  • Memory: 6GB RAM
  • Storage: 75GB free
  • OS: Windows 7/8/10 (latest service pack)

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600/Intel Core i7-4770
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 590/NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB
  • Memory: 16GB RAM
  • Storage: 75GB free
  • OS: Windows 7/8/10 (latest service pack)

These minimum/recommended specs would let you play the game in 1080p… at a tolerable frame rate. The recommended specs would fall short on delivering a stable frame rate at Ultra, however. You would need at least an RTX 2060 or RX 5700 for that.

2 – Borderlands 3 Settings Overview

  • There is a built-in benchmarking tool so that you could compare the different quality levels in Borderland 3 more easily. However, the differences between graphics quality settings aren’t really clear – mostly due to the series’ cel-shaded art style.
  • FXAA has a negligible effect on your CPU’s performance – it is best to just leave it on. Temporal AA is a good choice as well.

  • Texture streaming, terrain detail, shadows, anisotropic filtering, character texture detail, and even screen space reflections are supposed to cause performance drops.  In practice, however, none of them affect Borderlands 3’s performance very much. You can turn down shadows to get a few more frames per second – the other settings can be left safely on high or ultra.
  • The settings that affect performance the most is volumetric fog – your performance would jump 25% if you turn the thing off – this could be the crucial option on lower end CPUs.
  • Foliage detail is another expensive niche option – turn it down to improve performance by about 12 percent. Turning off draw distance can provide the same amount as well, but it is not recommended, as it would affect gameplay.
  • The last heavy setting is probably material quality – you would get a 14% boost if it is set to low.

3 – Borderland 3 Review

Borderland 3 is a friendly and fun single-player/coop experience, in which story-based adventures are brought to the forefront. While the combat can feel repetitive at times, Borderland 3 is the best entry yet.

Character roster

Stay true to tradition, Borderland 3 let you choose between four brand new vault hunters, each with their own playstyles, special abilities, and voice acting. The first one is FL4K, a robotic hunter who can summon one of three dangerous pets to help in battle. There is also Moze, a hunter who can summon a mechanoid exosuit, Zane the stealth operative with an array of tech powers and lastly, a Siren - Amara… with the usual siren powers.

Each character has a pretty detailed skill tree for you to fill in the course of the game – there is definitely plenty of builds to be made throughout the game. The appearance of your character can be tinkered with as well – using pickups found in the game world.

Borderland 3's Story

Overall, Borderland 3’s story is definitely good enough to fit in the RPG genre. A major threat has once again emerged in Pandora – and it is even more dangerous than anything that has happened in the previous game. The main villain, the Calypso Twins, can drain people of their powers and life force, turning them into dust at the end.

Afterward, the duo uses their godlike powers to assemble a crew and seek the remaining vaults on Pandora. This is where the team of protagonists come in – they have to stop the villain from destroying Sanctuary.

Sprinkled into the story is a good amount of humor – Claptrap is back for the dark joke schtick as well. While some of the jokes are off the mark, the majority of it works. The sheer size of Borderland 3 is also a plus – it is the first Borderland game to take you to other planets.

The core gameplay of the Borderland is mostly unchanged in the third game. The game still relies on its loot drops cycle: Fight enemy, get drop, fight stronger enemy. There is an additional damage type in Borderland 3 – radiation. Some weapon has multiple ammo types for you to switch between as well.

World design

The game starts on Pandora but you would get to explore two more planets, Promethea and Eden-6 afterward- each has their own vaults.

There would be distinct large open-world layouts for each location. While Pandora is still the usual rock-filled canyons, Promethea is completely different – with highways and skyways in a futuristic metro city. Eden-6, on the other hand, is a lush forest planet.

The Sanctuary in this game is a spaceship that would let you travel from planets to planets. There is a huge amount of customization available on the home base as well.

Better with friends

Coop is now streamlined for people from different levels, with loot drops and challenges fine-tuned based on your current level. If a level 10 player is teaming up with a level 25, each person would get an experience based on their ability. Everyone would get an even challenge - this would encourage people to team up with each other.

This is probably the best Borderland yet - with all the mechanics' people liked in the past remains the same. If you are a fan of the previous games, this is a must-play.
