This series by Netflix is actually inspired by another movie released in 1982, The Dark Crystal.
With the direction of Jim Henson and Frank Oz, The Dark Crystal is a story of an old conflict between the Skeksis and the Mystics on the faraway world of Thra, which has been split by a crack in a magical crystal. One piece of the crystal finds its way to an elf-like "Gelfling", who will later venture into a mission: returning the piece, restoring the crystal, and saving his alien world. The movie featured a narrative in a Tolkien-style, and received mixed reviews from the audience.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is an upcoming Netflix television series. Following the plot of the original movie, the audience will have a chance to enter the mysterious world of Thra while keeping their eyes on three Gelflings – Rian, Brea and Deet, who spark a revolution against the Skeksis when they learn about a horrifying secret behind their power that can be a threat to the world.

On May 21, 2019, Netflix has announced that this series is set to release on August 30, 2019. The series is also reported to have ten episodes, which is the usual number of episodes for Netflix's series.

Along with the new trailer, Nintendo has published a short summary for the game:
"The highly anticipated Netflix series, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, comes to life as a thrilling tactical strategy game! In the Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics, fans will have an opportunity to experience the fantasy world of Thra by playing through–and going beyond–the events of the series. Players will even encounter never-seen-before playable characters, stories, and environments. Coming to Nintendo Switch in Q4 2019."
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics is currently under development of BonusXP and En Masse Entertainment. While being revealed that will come available in 2019, the game is still raising a question about its release on other platforms except for Nintendo Switch.
