One of the best additions in the new Caves & Cliffs Part 1 update of Minecraft is the Axolotls. Currently, these mobs can be found in any cave systems' waterways - they will be moved to the new Lush Caves biome when Caves & Cliffs Part 2 comes out.

About Axolotls in Minecraft
The Axolotl is an actual real-life amphibian that lives in caves. They are incredibly rare and are actually critically endangered. The whole species are native to the Valley of Mexico. This fact makes axolotls one of the hot-hunted animals in Minecraft.
In Minecraft, Axolotls come in 5 different colors, with the baby axolotl inheriting the color from one of its two parents, at random. Unlike sheep, its color cannot be mixed. There is a 1/1200 chance that a blue baby axolotl will spawn, regardless of its parents' coloring.
The unique mechanic that Axolotls have in Minecraft is "playing dead". Upon taking damage, there is a chance that the creature would fake being dead so that other hostile mobs in the vicinity would stop attacking. If you kill the enemy that put the Axolotls into its "playing dead" mode, a brief regenerative effect is granted.

How to breed Axolotls in Minecraft
You can't feed axolotls in Minecraft with the usual easy-to-farm resources like carrots or wheat - they only eat tropical fish. Get a bucket of tropical fish to lure them in and breed. Feeding one bucket to each parent Axolotl would cause a baby Axolotl to spawn. The player also gets some experience, ranging between 1 to 7 points.
Axolotls in Minecraft can breed every 5 minutes, and baby axolotls need 20 minutes to grow into adults. You can reduce the time needed by 10% for every bucket of fish you feed them. This means feeding them ten buckets in a row will fully grow a baby Axolotls into its adult form immediately.
To increase the chance for a Blue Axolotl to spawn, players should create a massive mob of Axolotls. The best way to do this to get as many axolotls to one place as possible then feed them all your tropical fish. This way, tons of baby Axolotls will spawn and the chance you get a rare blue Axolott is much higher.
