Creepers are probably one of the most iconic mobs in Minecraft. Its explosion can wipe out both the player and the base they built. While terrifying, they are one of the best sources for Gunpowder and mob heads in Minecraft.
In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase how to make a Creeper farm in Minecraft 1.19.
1. How to build a creeper farm in Minecraft
Creeper farms' structure is fairly simple.
Required materials
- Two hoppers
- Two chest
- Lots of trapdoors
- Lots of building blocks
- Two cats
- Lava bucket
- 4 signs
- 12 carpets
Step-by-step guide to build a creeper farm
- Dig a 3x2 hole and put a 2x2x2 wall on each side of the hole.
Build the farm's general layout by placing 3 blocks diagonally on both sides of the 2x2x2 walls. Afterward, extend the last block to make a wall of 5 blocks.
Finally, use more blocks to build a back wall to make it a closed space. Do the same for the other side of the hole.
Add blocks to make the walls 2-blocks high.
Next, we are going to make the roof entirely from trapdoors. We need to use trap doors to make sure that only creepers will spawn and not zombies or skeletons. All the trap doors should stick to the upper half of the upper blocks of the wall.
However, for the 2 upper middles blocks in the 2 back walls, you need to stick the trap doors on the lower half.
Place a cat on each of those 2 lower trap doors. Since creepers are afraid of cats, they will try to run away from cats after spawning.
Seal up the roof with building blocks so no light can travel through so creepers can spawn.
Place a carpet under the cat and keep adding carpets that are 2 blocks apart. Make sure you do the same for both sides.
Go back to the initial hole and place trap doors to fill the top of the hole and open all of them. This is for the creepers to walk down the hole as they consider trapdoors as solid blocks.
Dig the hole 4 blocks deeper and make a long water tunnel.
At the end of the tunnel, place hoppers that connect to chests to collect the loot. Place lava at the head level of the creepers to kill them. You can use signs in order to keep the lava in place.
This is a completely automated farm. The only thing you need to do is wait for creepers to spawn and collect gunpowder from the chests.
Creepers spawning in the dark are scared by the cats to run into a hole. From this hole, water will carry them over to the lava, which kills them. Afterward, Creeper loot drops into the hopper then into the chest.
Why do you need to farm creepers?
They are the main source of Gunpowder. It can be used for various items in the Minecraft crafting system.
It is used to make Fireworks, TNT, and Fire Charges. It can also work as a Brewing ingredient. Adding Gunpowder to any Potion in the Brewing Stand can transform it into the Splash Potion.
This means you can throw it and it will apply effects to everything in the splash area when it lands. The feature is especially helpful with negative effects such as Harm Potions.
How to create a Charged Creeper farm?
A charged Creeper is a stronger variant of the normal Creeper that appears when a Creeper is struck by lightning. It has a significantly increased explosion power, dealing up to 127 damage points on the hardest difficulty. A normal creeper can only deal up to 64 damage.
In order for a creeper to become charged, lightning must strike within a 4x4 area of it. Charged creepers despawn just like regular creepers, so it may be prudent to nametag any creepers that you wish to keep for an extended period of time.
Afterward, you can turn the normal creepers into Charged variant by using a trident with the Channeling enchantment to summon Lightning during a thunderstorm. Simply wait for a thunderstorm and throw a channeling trident next to one of the creepers. Note that the area need to be exposed to the sky for this enchantment to work.
It is recommended to have the Loyalty enchantment on the trident to allow for easy retrieval.
Why do you need a charged creeper?
In Java Edition, a charged creeper explosion that kills zombies, skeletons, wither skeletons, or other creepers causes one of those mobs to drop its corresponding mob head. Only one mob can drop with a single creeper explosion, so if multiple valid mobs are killed the one that drops a head is chosen at random.
