Ocelots are passive mobs that spawn naturally in Jungle biomes. They are one of the earliest tamable mobs in Minecraft, the other two being the Horse and the Wolf.

In this article, Gurugamer is going to showcase how to tame an Ocelot in Minecraft and some of its best uses.

1. How to Tame An Ocelot in Minecraft?

A player gains an ocelot's trust by feeding it raw cod or salmon until heart particles show, causing it to no longer flee from players. Each food item has a 1⁄3 chance of gaining the ocelot's trust.

There is a 1/3 chance that it will trust you when you feed it fish!

Players need to be pretty careful when approaching them, however. Ocelots are one of the few mobs that can sprint, with a tendency to get away from players. Lure Ocelots by holding raw cod or raw salmon within 10 blocks. If the player moves, turns their head too quickly or stops holding the item while within 6 blocks, the ocelot would flee.

How to breed Ocelots

When breeding an ocelot, you'll need to sneak up on it like you would with a fox. Next, make sure to feed the ocelot raw cod or raw salmon. After doing that the ocelots will enter love mode, and a baby ocelot will spawn within seconds.

To get these fishes, just craft a fishing rod and fish in the nearest body of water.

Players don't really need to put nametags on Ocelots, as Ocelots that are trusting do not despawn. Otherwise, they may despawn when far enough from a player, similar to hostile mobs.

2. How to find an Ocelot in Minecraft

There is a 1/3 chance for a spawn attempt to fail in jungles, and spawning always fails in bamboo jungles or sparse jungles. While ocelots are passive mobs and part of the passive mob cap, they cannot spawn at all on Peaceful difficulty.

Ocelots spawn above grass blocks at sea level (y=63 per default) or higher in groups of 1 or 2. These are mostly adults but sometimes ocelots spawn as kittens. When an adult ocelot spawns, there is a 1/7 (14.3%) chance for 2 ocelot kittens to spawn with it; this chance only includes spawning naturally.

How to find jungle biome in Minecraft

World generation tries to generate biomes with similar temperatures next to each other. Jungles are a 'Lush' biome type so they are commonly found next to regular forests.

If you don't want to do it manually and have enabled cheats, just type “/locate biome jungle” in the chat textbox. After doing so, a text pops up, showing the coordinate of the nearest jungle biome.

3. What are the uses of Ocelots in Minecraft

Fun fact: before Cats were added to Minecraft, tamed Ocelots would be turned into them. This stopped after Mojang added a new separate Cat mob into the game.

Deterring Phantoms

Phantoms are annoying enemies in Minecraft. They are flying undead hostile mobs that spawn when the player has not slept or died for three or more in-game days. This makes them an annoying nuisance that needs to be dealt with fairly often.

Phantoms are the only source for Phantom Membrane, an item that allows you to repair elytras.

However, for whatever reason, phantoms are scared of cats, including ocelots, and will stay 16 blocks away from them. By keeping ocelots in their base, players would be able to prevent phantoms from spawning and attacking them. This only works in Bedrock - Java players need to use cats instead.

Countering Creepers

A creeper is a common hostile mob that silently approaches players and explodes. It is an iconic part of Minecraft and can be pretty annoying. Ocelots allow players to deal with them, as creepers stay 6 blocks away from an ocelot and will run away from them.

However, a creeper would still explode if it has begun its detonation. It wouldn't flee unless the player leaves its blast radius.

Farming chickens

Similar to foxes, players can use ocelots to kill chickens in Minecraft. If players need to kill a large number of chickens in an enclosure, just let an ocelot loose on the site. After the ocelots have done their job, players can come back to collect uncooked chicken and feathers.

4. Ocelots vs Cats in Minecraft

Overall, the cats are better for decoration. Ocelots always have the same tan and spotted textures, while Cats have a plethora of colors (or breeds) to spawn as. Cats are also noticeably smaller than the Ocelot, despite sharing the same model.

Additionally, while both mobs take the same food to "tame", technically only the Cat can be tamed, while the Ocelot can only trust the player.
