It Lurks Below is a retro-style 2D Action-RPG that bears a strikingly similar aesthetic to Diablo. This is not particularly surprising considering that it was made by David Brevik, who was a key member of the team behind the original Diablo and its sequel. After spending a bit of time in Early Access, the game has now officially launched on Steam.

It Lurks Below features 8 playable classes for you to choose from, all of which should be pretty familiar if you have played any game of this genre before. There’s the Warrior – a master-of-arms that can switch between offensive and defensive stances to adapt to different situations, the Paladin – a holy knight who smites down the forces of evil with heavy two-handed weapons and purification spells, the Rogue – a stealthy assassin that slips in and out of sight to strike enemies when they least expect it, the Wizard – a class that specializes in controlling the elements to unleash devastating spells, and more. As a result, there are tons of options for you to customize your own playstyle.
While dungeon crawlers aren’t exactly a rare sight on Steam these days, It Lurks Below includes several unique elements to make it stand out from the rest of the pack. This is a true RPG that puts a heavy emphasis on stats and loot. All the levels are randomly-generated, as are item stats, so it will take quite a lot of grinding to find the ideal piece of equipment with the exact attributes that you’re looking for. Think of it as a Diablo successor, albeit in 2D.
On top of that, the game also has 3 different gameplay modes to appeal to a wide range of players. There’s the standard Survival experience, and then there’s the Descent mode in which all survival aspects have been removed, making it ideal for those who are just looking for endless action. Meanwhile, if you need a more relaxed experience to blow off some steam, the Creative mode is there for you.
