Oddworld: Soulstorm – is the true sequel of Abe’s Oddysee.

One of the most successful of the Oddworld series is that it has always brought an idea which is a real problem in the real world – the slave issues.

When the first title of the quintology - Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee was released, the author Lorne Lanning has expressed with upset: “More slaves on planet Earth than there ever were in world history combined…”. Consequently, the game has successfully brought that idea to the main character – Abe – who was a slave fighting against his masters.

It was so successful in creating sympathy and raising awareness as well as anger against such a serious matter in the world that even after 20 years, people still desperately eager to hear something from Lorne.

And the creators don’t disappoint their long waiting fans.

After the remake version New ‘n’ Tasty was as impactful as expected, Oddworld Inhabitants is looking to turn the table with the new sequel: Oddworld: Soulstorm which is genuinely a sequel which connects coherently with the previous title’s story.

Oddworld: Soulstorm grabs the storyline from the last events of New ‘n’ Tasty. Previously, Abe has beaten his severe boss Mollusk the Glukkon - the RuptureFarms’ meanest occupant, messing up RuptureFarms set free to his coworkers.

Now, Abe and his three hundred liberated Mudokons are on the run away from the inferno exploding disaster to find the way of living. Without water, food or a shelter, they found a beverage named “the Brew” that shed rays of light to the independent dreams.

"Abe, this lowly slave, would slowly start having an impact on the major economic forces of the world and really start fucking shit up," – said Lorne Lanning.

About the gameplay

Compared with its predecessors, Oddworld: Soulstorm has huge differences not only in the graphics quality but also in the game structure as well.

The graphics quality in Oddworld: Soulstorm is decently improved. The resolutions are higher, and the animation is much smoother. Well, it’s mandatory, since this game was not released in the 20th century.

The creators name the graphics in the upcoming title as ‘2.9D’. They have explained the terms that every object in the game including the characters, the obstacles are entirely designed in 3D. However, the interactions and actions that you make will mostly happen in 2D with a fixed viewpoint. Yes, “mostly.”

Experiencing the
Experiencing the "almost" 3D gameplay in Oddworld: Soulstorm

At a certain level, Abe and his friends will take a turn in the corner, stepping into another frame. That’s when the camera will turn the perspective perpendicularly. Players now will have to explore the game in the cube-like three-dimensional world. And this cube is not one-layer. The creators have done a fantastic job in putting layers of level on top of each other. Lanning said that he expected the game to have totally 20 levels when being released.

Unlike the epic Super Mario Bros asking players to control their character exploring the world with only up-down-left-right in a flat paper sheet Oddworld: Soulstorm has a respectable depth. Players won’t have to control Abe and his friends over the monitor in the same distance throughout the game anymore.

You will still have to gain more follower to upgrading Abe’s abilities, but in this game, the followers are even more critical. Everything Abe can do, the followers can do it too. They’re more like the useful allies now, rather than only the objective that we have to protect.

“They can become fighting allies,” Lanning explained. “It’s more like you’re developing a gang, a mob that you can then position around like a tower defense game.”

And last but not least, the game will have multiple finales. Lanning confirmed that the ending you encounter might depend on the number of Mukodons you can save. And with the ability upgrade mechanics of the game, you’ll probably have to play the game for 12-15 hours more. In enjoyment, for sure.

The developers planned to release the game in 2020. The exact date is yet to be announced.
