While Steam is not exactly popular in China, the size of its userbase is still pretty decent, like every other month, a Chinese indie title would rise to the top seller list. The weird part is that they managed the deed with the game only available in Simplified Chinese. Games like Scroll of Taiwu and Chinese Parents score massive success in 2019, with over 1 million copies floated for each.
Sands of Salzaar (部落与弯刀) released on Jan 2, about one week ago. In that short amount of time, the game has catapulted into Steam’s Global best sellers list with about fifty million copies sold in the first week. Based on the growth rate, it is expected to reach two hundred thousand when January ends. While being Chinese only, the game has gathered about over two thousand positive reviews, with peak concurrent players approaching twenty thousand.
The gameplay and assets were really good for an indie early access game, with Dynasty Warriors/Diablo hybrid style of combat. You would be surrounded by massive hordes of enemies and would have to try your best to come out of it alive. The game world would be set in a mystical desert, with dynamically generated maps and dungeons. The art style is simple and clean. There is a huge variety of classes, abilities, and items for you to work on and customize.
Currently, the developers are making English localization their top priority. Based on its Steam Page, Sands of Salzaar would be released in English eventually.
