All of us may face this situation more than once: we’re trying to load a website and suddenly lose Internet access, either from spotty Wi-Fi or slow network performance. A few years earlier, the Chrome team realized that there was nothing fun about being kicked offline… unless users had something to do. Then, the offline Dino game (much-known as “T Rex No Internet game”) was born. This hidden game can be found on the new tab page once Google Chrome users are offline; just press the spacebar and the dinosaur will jump into your screen.

In this article by Gurugamer.com, let’s sit down together to learn more about the journey of this creature from the Cretaceous period to the modern web browser as well as the ways to play the “No Internet game T Rex” when you’re both offline and online.

1. The idea behind T Rex No Internet game

According to the creators of the Chrome dino - Edward Jung, Alan Bettes, and Sebastien Gabriel, the idea of “an endless runner” as an Easter came into their mind in early 2014.

Like the visuals illustrates, the team wanted to make an environment of pre-historic age when the Internet had not appeared yet. The visual background of the “No Internet connection T Rex game” is set on a desert with rocks, birds, and cacti where the T-Rex needs to jump and duck while running.

“The cacti and desert setting were part of the first iteration of the “you-are-offline” page, while the visual style is a nod to our tradition of pixel-art style in Chrome’s error illustrations,” Sebastien revealed.

The creators also shared that the only restriction they put on themselves was to preserve the motion of the T-Rex rigid that is strongly reminiscent of vintage video games.

Edward Jung disclosed that they had too many things to figure out at that time: collision detection, duck and jump physics and especially, cross-platform compatibility. The first iteration of “T Rex No Internet game” was run smoothly on older Android phones. It was not until December 2014 that the Chrome Dino scaled to all platforms.
