A surprising fact related to the indie favorite Firewatch has been revealed: a handheld gaming system. It is app developer Panic, who stated that they worked on the project during the last four-year-period with the purpose of “being fun” only. He did create the appealing, teeny-sized unit Playdate.

As given by Panic, Playdate is designed to be complementary, rather than to take the place of any existing consoles or platforms that are out there. The company described in a post that Playdate was created not only to give a jolt of fun in between the times you spend with your phone and your home console but also to fill the moments when you just want a game you can pick up and play.

Introducing The Play Date Game

There's a black-and-white screen, which doesn't come with a backlight on the front of Playdate. However, it doesn’t matter since Panic affirms that as long as you have a light nearby. Likewise, the 400 × 240 resolution LCD will be clear at night and look spectacular for the whole day. There's familiar controls in A and B buttons and a D-pad right before. It is interesting to note that the crank on the side is a rotating analog controller. The crank will be used exclusively in the game for quite sometimes or even not at all.

No cartridge is here. Specialized for Playdate, the games will arrive over-the-air in something called a season. Each week during the 12-week-period, the system will receive a new game. Besides, it is obvious that there's a new title ready to play by the signal of light on the hardware. The system contains these games. Yet it is uncertain to know whether or not there will be more than one season of games. Crankin's Time Travel Adventure, which was developed by Keita Takahashi, creator of Katamari Damacy, is informed to be the very first game for Playdate. In order to control the flow of time, use the crank, backward and forwards, just like when you try and navigate obstacles.
