1. Overview of Cayo Perico island
For those who don't know the Cayo Perico island location in the game, Cayo Perico is a fictional island off the coast of Colombia in the GTA Universe.
Where is Cayo Perico island in real life?
There are multiple inspirations for Cayo Perico island in real life. Its shape is based on Canouan, a small island of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (mirrored and rotated).
The Cayo Perico island itself is based on Norman's Cay (Cayo Norman), a small island in the Bahamas used by the cartel for smuggling cocaine into the US. The estates on the island are based on Hacienda Nápoles, a luxurious estate built by Columbian drug lord Pablo Escobar.
The Cayo Perico Heist
GTA Online's Cayo Perico Heist is the highest-paying job in the game. In this heist, players scope out the island of Juan Strickler (El Rubio), one of the GTA world's most notorious drug dealers. It contains an untold fortune in art, gold and drug money, scattered across the island.
Once all preparation works are done, the crew executes the heist, recovers Madrazo's files and escapes. Overall, players consider Cayo Perico to be the best heist in GTA Online.
2. How to visit and explore Cayo Perico in free roam
While Cayo Perico is a completely new location in the world of GTA Online, players just can't explore it freely outside of the heist-related activities. However, there is a glitch to circumvent that and roam around without any restriction.
You will be limited to just sightseeing and running around the place, but that's still better than nothing. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to go to Cayo Perico island again.
Hack the signal box
Set up the heist by going to the Kosatka like normal. Afterward, start the Gather Intel mission and head to the island. Head to the communication tower and hack the signal box to get access to the sightseer app on your phone.
Get caught exactly 4 times
In this step, you need to get caught 4 times by a guard, a camera, or a patrolling vehicle. Make sure they only caught you 4 times, as you would be kicked out of the island on the fifth.
Wait for a patrolling vehicle
Make your way to a route/location where a patrolling vehicle would pass. Look for the big red circles that indicate the patrolling vehicles on the map. Pull up your phone interface while standing in the middle of the road and wait for the car to approach you.
End Gather Intel mission
Open up the sightseer app immediately once the car is nearby. After getting caught by the guard, you will be taken out of the app, ending the "Gather Intel" mission. This leaves you in free roam mode while you are still on the island.
Afterward, you will be able to freely explore the place. There won't be any guards and security cameras on the island, and you will still be able to access all your weapons.
Exit Cayo Perico island
How to exit Cayo Perico island after glitching? Well, to do that, just make your way toward the party's dance area and interact with the parked jeep. Alternatively, you can also walk into the crowd of dancers on the dance floor. You will be kicked out and return to Los Santos.
3. GTA 5 Cayo Perico island mod for single player
If players don't play GTA Online but still want to explore the Cayo Perico island, mods are probably the best solution. There are two mods that can do this:
Cayo Perico Island for Single Player
This mod adds the island of Cayo Perico into the GTA 5 map. It is located Southeast of the main map, behind the aircraft carrier. This is not a complete mod, as there are no cars and pedestrians.
Below are the requirements mods for install. Players need to set up their GTA with the following mods first.
- RAGEPluginHook (not included)
- RAGENativeUI (included version 1.8)
To install Cayo Perico Island for Single Player, just drag and drop all files into the GTA 5 folder. Add the plugin to load on startup using RagePluginHook, or load it manually in RPH's console.
The Cayo Perico Heist in SP
This mod adds the Cayo Perico heist to GTA 5 single player. It also included the submarine Kosatka, which is a GTA Online exclusive. The Cayo Perico Heist has 5 Setups and 1 Finale. Players can choose to play the finale solo or with 3 AI teammates. Note that the Cayo Perico Heist in SP mod does not work on pirated versions of GTA 5.
